COVID-19 vaccination programme update & Fake text warning

Changes were made to the Government’s plans for vaccinating against COVID-19 over the Christmas and New Year period. Below are some updates relevant to pharmacy teams.

The COVID-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University/AstraZeneca has been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Whilst some community pharmacy sites will be commissioned by regional NHSE&I teams to fill any gaps in provision, PSNC is keen to see the sector play a greater role in the vaccination programme and have made that clear to DHSC and NHSE&I.

PSNC is working with the other pharmacy bodies on press coverage, making clear that we believe the skills of community pharmacists and their teams should be used by the NHS to help deliver this mass vaccination programme.

Fake texts warning
Consumer group Which? is warning the public to be on the alert for fake messages about the COVID-19 vaccine. They have identified a fake NHS text telling people they are eligible to apply for the COVID-19 vaccine. Pharmacy teams are asked to help make sure patients are aware that they will only be invited in the form of a letter either from their GP or the national booking system.
